Some information on how to add railroad backdrop buildings
Miniature railroad backdrop buildings aficionados will say any step in the process of adding items is fun, but can be challenging. Sometimes buildings are actual three dimensional buildings, others prefer to add flat buildings to their backdrops. Flat or building fronts can be added, but many times they look flat and not like full buildings, so it's important to place it at the end of a backdrop versus in the middle. Another way to add a building without adding a full building, is using one that sticks out a bit even a few inches, It can be three sides, and it will look like a real fully dimensional building. Some people are finding that using a type of software that can give a good overview of what the railroad will look like with various buildings added, before the buildings are actually added very helpful.
There are many little tricks that can be employed to camouflage a flat building. Flat buildings are cheaper, and take less time to make if you're making it from scratch. On the actual backdrop, you can paint some trees, and place part of the tree on the corner of the flat building, that will a facade making it look three denominational. Flat buildings when ordered come in sheets on thick matted paper. They are very easy to cut out and prepare for adding to the railroad backdrop. Something very important to remember when cutting the buildings, is to make sure they are cut very straight. For rent signs, or for sale signs can be used to glue the flat buildings onto, it's a much cheaper way to do it. Use a spray glue to attach the building to the paper used. Rubber cement can also be used. Test fit the flat building to make sure it fits before permanently gluing it.
